Boyle won the outstanding contribution to British film award at the Jameson Empire Awards, following on from his success at the Oscars, Baftas and Golden Globes earlier this year.
After commenting to Empire magazine that he would rather Bury FC won the FA Cup than get an Oscar, two Bury players and the manager presented Boyle with his prize.
He said: "Thank you very much – to get this from Bury is amazing. In inimitable Bury fashion, we trashed Bournemouth 1-0."
The award for Best British film did not go to Boyle’s Slumdog Millionaire after readers of the magazine voted instead for Guy Ritchie’s Rocknrolla.
Christian Bale was named best actor for his role as Batman in The Dark Knight, while the movie took the best film accolade.
