Reigning figure skating champion Kim Yu-na and legendary star Michelle Kwan will unveil their first performance as a duo at the “2010 All That Skate Summer” ice show on July 23 to 25 in Goyang, Gyeonggi Province.
The two queens of the ice will present their piece at the end of the first part of each of the four shows along with “Hero,” a song of which the title is meaningful in the way that Kim performs with her role model Kwan.
The highly acclaimed pair performed in an ensemble piece last August at the “Ice All Stars 2009,” but this is the first time that the duo will appear in a program specifically design for them.
“The song ‘Hero’ will touch the hearts of the fans as Michelle has been Yu-na’s hero ever since she stepped into the sport,” Kim’s agent All That Sports said.
“Yu-na was so mesmerized by Michelle’s performance in the 1998 Nagano Winter Olympics that she even mastered Michelle’s every move in that program. Now both of them are heroines of the sport
“The music ‘Hero’ will be special for the fans as Kim is now an inspiration for them,” the agent added.
David Wilson, Kim’s choreographer, also mentioned the particular reason for selecting the piece of music, as Kristi Yamaguchi, another American figure skating star and the gold medalist of the 1992 Winter Olympic Games, along with Kwan were inspired by the 19-year-old Kim.
“Kristi told me two years ago that her favorite figure skater among the active ones is Yu-na,” Wilson said.
“She now leads her life encouraged by Yu-na. Just like Michelle brought motivation to Kim, Kim also inspires other skaters deeply, including both the retired and the active athletes, such as Yamaguchi,” the choreographer explained.
Wilson hopes the pair’s performance to “Hero” would be able to deliver the message the program intends ? the internationally acclaimed pair motivates each other, and just like the duo made their dream come true, others would be encouraged by their success and accomplish their dreams.
