Eric Clapton very rarely hits a bum note – the most recent one perhaps being that 1986 concert with Phil Collins, Nathan East and Greg Philliganes, where he flubbed up the beginning of the solo to Sunshine Of Your Love. Luckily, such gaffs were absent at the Singapore Indoor Stadium on Monday night.
In true bluesman style, Clapton and his band – ace drummer Steve Gadd and regular bassist Willie Weeks – walked onstage without any fanfare. It was such an understated entrance those queuing up for drinks at the concession stand didn’t even know the concert had started.
Kicking off with the blues number Key To The Highway, Clapton alternated his set between blues standards like Driftin’, Hoochie Coochie Man and Nobody Loves You When You’re Down And Out, and pop numbers like his soulful Old Love, his bouncy take of I Shot The Sheriff and, yes, that old crowd-pleasing gem, Wonderful Tonight.
