Relief efforts for Japan quake victims have gathered momentum across the world. India – the largest recipient of Japan’s overseas development assistance – is also doing its bit to help the survivors. India has extended its full support to offer aid and relief material. 25,000 blankets have been air lifted and are ready to send naval ships and rescue teams to the country.
Across India, scores of people gathered to show solidarity with those affected by the devastation brought on by a massive earthquake and tsunami in Japan. Buddhists monks in the holy city of Varanasi held special prayers for the victims. “We were very upset hearing of the earthquake and tsunami in Japan. We are praying everyday for the peace and well-being of the people there.
We pray that everybody lives in peace and the pain of survivors becomes less,” said Gyaneswar, head of the Buddhist Monk Committee. The Indo-Japan Friendship Association organised a condolence meet at the birthplace of Mahtma Gandhi in western Ahmedabad. Many are praying for the safety of survivors, as Japan’s nuclear crisis escalates.
