In a recent interview with a British newspaper, Slumdog Millionaire actress Freida Pinto stated, “It’s just this thing that people (in India) are so fascinated by white skin.”
To put this statement more into context, Freida referred to half-a-dozen or so fairness cream ads that she has been seeing on television since she was a child. Freida went on to say that at a young age she did a few ads for these creams when she was trying to make it as an actress.
“There were some very silly, stupid auditions that I had to go for. Like, there’s this girl who walks into college and nobody’s paying any attention to her because she is not using this particular cream – some kind of moisturizer or fairness cream, which I’m completely against”, Freida explained.
Though the actress made this bold statement regarding Indians wanting to constantly be fair, it doesn’t mean Freida herself is one of those Indians that believe in this. She tells the paper this fascination runs through Bollywood as well and some actors believe the more fair the skin the better the chances of getting an audition. The discreet Freida didn’t want to mention names but I’m sure she had a few in mind when she made this statement!
