Freddie Roach has begun his work as a consultant to the downtrodden U.S. boxing program.
Roach also operates a successful boxing gym in Hollywood, Cal., and has a reality show film crew following him around 24/7. To say Roach is busy is the understatement of the year.
Roach, who is a hero in the Philippines because of his work with Pacquiao, was asked by the Philippine government to work with their 2012 Olympic team.
“I started to think, “Why not work with the American team?” he said.
So when he was asked by the USOC, Roach jumped at the opportunity. Now he has been thrust into the role of savior, whether he likes it or not.
“If he can make a world champion, he can make an Olympian,” said Rau’shee Warren, a flyweight who is attempting to make his record third Olympic team.
Roach has already had five-day training sessions with two of the top male Olympic hopefuls – Warren and Raynell Williams, a lightweight from the 2008 team – and two of the top women – Queen Underwood and Christiana Cruz. Women’s boxing will be an Olympic sport for the first time in 2012.
If anyone can turn the US boxing team members into Olympic champions, it’s Freddie Roach!!
