Two years ago, we met Francis at a Nylon Magazine party. We knew it was only a matter of time before he would start gracing the top runways for the top designers!
He has since shot the Gap Autumn 2011 look book and most recently the Tommy Hilfiger winter campaign. Editorial credits include Volt, Schon and Rodeo magazine. He has also walked for Y-3, Maison Martin Margiela and Loden Dager among many others
Brighton, UK born Francis Lane (Premier Models) was signed off the back of entering a modeling competition for United Colors of Benetton, which saw him go on to shoot the campaign with Josh Olins.
Francis is half Chinese, half English and he did this follow up interview with us from his vacation in India. We thought he would be perfect for the Chinese themed edition. Thanks Francis!
ASIANCE: Which parent is Chinese?
Francis: My mum is Chinese.
ASIANCE: How did your mom incorporate your Chinese heritage growing up? Was it a strong influence?
Francis: Mainly through celebrating Chinese New Year and keeping in touch regularly with our large extended family. She is from a family of six so I have lots of cousins. We would always meet up and eat traditional Chinese food. However, it wasn’t such a strong influence because I am the fourth generation in England. My great grand parents moved over.
ASIANCE: What do you love the most about your Chinese heritage?
Francis: The thing I love the most about my Chinese heritage is that it makes me different from the majority of people. There is roughly one million mixed race people in the UK and a much smaller number of mixed Asian English.
ASIANCE: What do you love the least about your Chinese heritage?
Francis: This also happens to be the thing I liked least as a child. I wanted to be the same as everyone, just like all children I guess.
ASIANCE: Do you have a favorite Asian male or female model?
Francis: Kiko Mizuhara. She is an actress, model most famous for her part in the film Norwegian Wood. She is also mixed race.
See Francis in the Home for the Holidays Hilfiger campaign!
ASIANCE: Do you have a favorite Asian male or female designer?
Francis: I guess I like Yohji Yamamoto, mostly for the Y?3 range.
ASIANCE: Who would you love to walk for?
Francis: I’d love to walk for Louis Vuitton.
ASIANCE: What do you look for in a significant other?
Francis: Beauty – equally both physical and in personality.
ASIANCE: Favorite place to travel?
Francis: My favorite place to travel is India. It’s so hectic busy and peaceful at the same time. There is nowhere in world like it. I absolutely never feel threatened by any one at any time including the night, even in the poorest areas.
ASIANCE: What are you looking forward to the most in your trip to Asia? What is your favorite place to visit in Asia?
Francis: I’m most looking forward to Tokyo. I love the author Haruki Murakami. He’s really sold Japanese culture to me. Also, I’d love to pretend I was in lost in translation.
ASIANCE: Where would you like to visit that you haven’t visit yet?
Francis: Again, India is my favorite place in Asia.
