Alexander Wang will become the new creative director of Balenciaga, taking up the mantle from French designer Nicolas Ghesquière. Born to Taiwanese parents, Mr. Wang will be the first designer of Asian origin to lead a major French fashion house.
Balenciaga broke the news on Twitter, linking to a release by parent company PPR.
The 28-year-old American is known for his youthful, street-inspired creations released under his New York label, which he will continue to helm in his new role. At Balenciaga, his task will be to “embrace and enrich the unique heritage of this fashion house which will soon be one hundred years old,” said Isabelle Guichot, Balenciaga’s president and chief executive, in the release.
PPR, a French luxury group, owns a variety of storied fashion brands including Gucci and Alexander McQueen.
