Michelle Wie withdrew from the Meijer LPGA Classic on Thursday, citing a hand injury.
Wie was halfway through her first round at Blythefield Country Club in Grand Rapids, Mich., when she went to the LPGA medical trailer and emerged with a bandage on her right wrist and hand, according to a MLive.com report.
“I don’t know what happened,” Wie said. “It just kind of started hurting last week and just started getting worse and got to the point where I couldn’t really hold a club today.
“So I’m just going to try to get an MRI right now and see what my next steps are. Hopefully I can play next week, so we’ll see.”
Wie, who has two victories this season, was scheduled to play in next week’s fourth major of the year – the Wegman’s LPGA Championship at Monroe Golf Club in Pittsford, N.Y. It is still unclear if she will play next week.
She is ranked No. 6 in the Rolex Rankings, but since her U.S. Women’s Open victory in June, Wie has only made the cut in one of her three starts (T-8 Walmart NW Arkansas Championship).
