Former Olympian Michelle Kwan became the latest to appear in the bid’s ongoing video series, sharing her thoughts on why Boston would be a “perfect host city for the Olympic Games.”
The two-time figure skating medalist won several U.S. National Championships, including a 2001 win at TD Garden. She cites Boston as having “the best sports fans in the world.” Kwan, it should noted, is a member of Boston 2024’s board of directors.
In the video, Kwan describes her experience as an Olympian, and how proud she felt to represent the United States (which she did in three Olympics).
Critics of the video endorsements from former Olympians will note that while Kwan is a famous name, she is no more qualified to assess Boston’s ability to host a fiscally responsible Games than anyone else (an assessment made following other sports celebrity endorsements). Also, she isn’t a resident of Massachusetts.
Still, she’s as experienced an athlete at international competitions as any American over the last 20 years and can speak to what it takes to organize the Games themselves. Though again, she was a figure skater, and has no direct experience with the Summer Games.
Can you just be happy for the girl? Geez!
