Ellen Pao, the interim-CEO of Reddit, stepped down from the company on Friday after a week of continued protests from users of the online message board, according to The New York Post.
Hundreds of thousands of users signed a petition calling for Pao to resign after she dismissed the popular talent director Victoria Taylor last month.
Reddit co-founder Steve Huffman will take over as CEO, the San Francisco company said.
Pao, who joined the company in 2013 and took over as interim CEO in November, will continue as an adviser for the rest of 2015.
Users saw the Taylor dismissal as another example of Pao’s heavy hand over the site, which promotes itself as the “front page of the Internet.”
Pao, users believe, had moved to censor some comments on Reddit’s bulletin boards, especially posts critical of her and her husband, the disgraced hedge fund manager Buddy Fletcher.
On May 10, 2012, Pao filed a gender discrimination suit against Kleiner Perkins which went to trial in late February 2015. The trial, lasting 24 days, resulted in a favorable verdict for Kleiner Perkins.
