A Pew Research study shows the Asian population is on track to be the largest immigrant group, outnumbering Hispanics in the US for the first time.
“Now this is big because Mexicans were the biggest part of the nation’s group of immigrants who’ve arrived since 1965,” said Mark Lopez, Pew Research Center. “But at the same time there’s been a rise of the number coming from Asia, from China, from India, from the Philippines.”
The Pew Research center conducted a comprehensive study that shows the steady rise of the Asian population will change the nation’s landscape in more ways than one.
By 2065, Asians will make up 38 per cent of the nation’s immigrant population while Hispanic numbers will have fallen by nearly half down to 31 per cent. The city of Houston, a cultural melting pot in Texas, gives Americans a glimpse into the country’s changing future.
Chinese businessman Austin Zhao came to the US 20 years ago and today he is the President of the Pathway to China, an established import export business in Houston.
“The business of America is business,” said Zhao. “This country encourages you to do business, so if you fail, you can keep trying again.”
Zhao believes in the American Dream as many other Asian immigrants do.The Asian population is not migrating to the US with just hopes and dreams in hand.
Around 61 per cent of Asian immigrants have a bachelor’s a degree before arriving in the US. Coupled with a strong work ethic, it is no surprise that Asian Americans have the highest household income averaging US$66,000 per year.
The President of the Asian Chamber of Commerce, Linda Toyota, who works with Zhao, and other Asian business owners, believes the proof is in the pudding.
“The Chamber is amazed at the education level and the hard work that people put into things,” she said. “That entrepreneurial spirit and hard work really is a reflection of Asian culture, and that’s something that is really well respected here.”
As Asians continue to make an economic and cultural imprint, in 50 years the growing Asian population is expected to change the face of America.
