Hollywood Chinese

Growing up in San Francisco's Chinatown during the 1960's, Chinese-American filmmaker Arthur Dong watched plenty of low-budget Chinese films from Hong Kong at the neighborhood theater. But the film that helped spark his imagination and inspire his love for cinema was the English-language Asian-American musical film Flower Drum Song starring Nancy Kwan and James Shigeta.

Commitment Hoes vs Commitment Phobes (Part 2)

There I was standing on line at my favorite coffee shop when all of a sudden the guy in front of me turned around and asked what I was going to order. I was shocked and partially annoyed at his forwardness, mostly because I'm about as chipper as Cruella De Vil at 7:30 on a Monday Morning without at least a small hit of my favorite
drug-Caffeine.

Natural Disaster

Monday morning, May 12, 2008. “Thousands Killed by Huge China Quake,” the CNN headline reads. I’ve just taken a midterm, and I’m ready to clamber into the comfort of down feathers, but the news on my open Firefox browser raises quite the alarm.

Camellia Oil (called “Tsubaki” Oil in Japan), is widely used in Japan for areas including hair care, body care, nail care and even cooking in some parts of Japan. While it is hailed for its nourishing properties and giving hair beautiful shine, evidence of actually promoting hair growth is limited.

Kristi Yamaguchi skating and dancing into American hearts

It’s been 16 years since Kristi Yamaguchi skated into the hearts of Americans by winning the Olympic Gold Medal in Albertville, France. She is at it again, dancing into American hearts each week on the hit show Dancing with the Stars. Kristi and her equally gorgeous partner Mark Ballas have received the highest scores each week (except once) and seem set to win this year’s Dancing with the Star’s crown.

So it was with great pleasure that I asked her to stand in front of my still camera.

Bulgogi Buffalo Burger

If there exists an edible that epitomizes the experience of being an American born Korean raised in Southern California, it is the Bulgogi Buffalo Burger. Imagine a 1/2 lb bulgogi-style seasoned slab of all-organic, grass-fed, free-range American buffalo meat topped with grilled onions, melted cheddar, crisp bean sprouts, crunchy purple cabbage, fragrant perilla leaves, pungent kimchi, and spicy jalapeños nestled between a roasted brown rice bun with a dollop of kochujang ketchup on the side. The bison burger meat is flavored with typical Asian seasonings of soy sauce and garlic but given an unconventional shot of Korean green plum wine, maesil ju. The Bulgogi Buffalo Burger also prominently features kochujang, fermented hot pepper paste and kimchi, spicy fermented napa cabbage- two national Korean foods, according to the Korean government. With your bulgogi, bap, and banchan in burger form, you can manhandle your Korean meal and sink your teeth in the good old fashioned American way!

Like most little girls, American Ballet Theater ballet dancer, Sarawanee Tanatanit, had always dreamed of being a dancer.

I'm just your average Asian American living in a city I love and living a generally fabulous existence. I have no PhD or degrees on my wall, but I've logged enough hours giving advice to consider myself a self-proclaimed expert. So when the opportunity to offer my advice to the masses arose, I jumped at the chance. No problem too big or small, ask me anything-I'm here to help!

Investing: Managing Your Trade with Stop

In early April, a friend of mine called. My friend, who we’ll call Sally, was concerned that Huntsman, a stock I had recommended in a previous article, had dropped. She told me she had purchased 200 shares of Huntsman at $23.81. Yet by early April, the stock was dropping. On April 3, it had fallen to $22.71. By April 9, the stock was at $22.11. Here’s a recent chart of the stock:

That Magic Number

When you’re comfortable enough with your significant other, you get to that point where you can ask and tell each other almost anything, including what sort of kinky things you’ve done in the past, fetishes, fantasies, and that infamous number. It’s that magic number that we’re all curious about yet cringe at the very thought of it- the number of sexual partners you had in the past.
