Writer, Director Jeff Fong is “Hapa” though he’s always spelled the word with 2 “p’s”. His mixture is 50% Chinese, 50% Italian, and he’s 100% in love with both.
Asian Americans aren’t given leading, dramatic roles in American films today, and Fong has taken matters into his own hands.
This film is a dramatic mockumentary that singles out this issue and tackles it to the floor with several laughs, a few tears, and a decent amount of anger.
This film touches on two very important subjects. The first, being type-cast and the struggle actors face when being reduced to only one type of role.
The other is the lack of Asian Americans in leading American roles. The only times we see this are in Martial Arts films or goofy comedies and that’s just not right. The only way to change this is for us to create such roles and stories for Asian Americans, and that’s exactly what this film is about. As Kazu’s trying to become a dramatic actor, he’s also being a dramatic character throughout the film, so the audience can see him being the character he wants to be, while also understanding his struggle. It’s the perfect film to portray to American audiences because it shows the stereotypes and prejudices against Asian Americans that still continue to happen today.
“KAZU” is a film that will strike home with people of all ethnicities and can be a footstep toward a social change that needs to happen.
This film needs the support of the people in order to become a reality. Please visit:
