Artist Kagome Ao
Kagome Ao is just an ordinary senior three student from a small place in Macau, China. Her love of Japanese Visual Kei, metal (especially poser metal!) has influenced her life and her art work. Her favorite bands are PENICILLIN and NightingeiL. Visual Kei has inspired her to create and express her creative side through, not music but digital art.
She started to take photos of herself in 2009, when she was only 15 years old, enlisting her friends for help when she could.
She would apply make-up herself, sometimes taking hours to do and create different characters and variations on herself. Then she learned to manipulate and edit her photos. Although she enjoys creating her art, her studies are her priority, as she prepares to go to college next year and hopes to master in graphic design.
Until then, she hones her skills in her free time. She began teaching herself Photoshop in 2008 and won numerous awards in 2009, providing her continued motivation to explore her creative side. In addition to her photography and computer work, she also creates hand-made art.
ASIANCE: Are other members of your family artists too?
Kagome Ao: It’s a pity that none of my family members are artists, and my parents don’t support me to major in graphic design in university but I insist on it because it’s my love! I won’t give up my love because of others.
ASIANCE: When you were growing up did you always paint and draw?
Kagome Ao: Yea, I always loved to paint and draw since I was a kid.
ASIANCE: I know you are inspired by Visual Kei (a movement among Japanese musicians, that is characterized by the use of make-up, elaborate hair styles and flamboyant costumes.) What is it you like the most about it?
Kagome Ao: I love the way they express their thoughts by music and visuals. I want to express my own thoughts too! However, I don’t have any talent with music, that’s why I choose to express my thoughts using visuals.
ASIANCE: Is all your work in 2D or have you tried 3D design as well?
Kagome Ao: Yea, all in 2D. 3D is hard for me. I will try to do it in university.
ASIANCE: Who are some of your favorite artists?
Kagome Ao: Huang guang jian is my favorite artist! I love his artwork so much! They are really detailed, gorgeous and amazing! Super awesome all of them! I hope I have his skill some day, so I will work hard step by step.
ASIANCE: Out of curiosity, what are some of your favorite movies?
Kagome Ao: Umm…I seldom watch movies because I’m not interested in it at all. I don’t know why. I fall asleep every time I watch a movie.
ASIANCE: Where will you go to University next year?
Kagome Ao: Taiwan! Because it’s quite a good place for studying graphic design. If I can’t get into the University of Taiwan, I will choose MPI in Macau.
ASIANCE: What type of work do you hope to do after graduation?
Kagome Ao: I hope to be a graphic designer after graduation. I hope to have my own studio after working for a few years.
ASIANCE: What do you like to do in your free time?
Kagome Ao: Oh, I don’t think I have free time because my school work is so heavy and when I’ve finished my school work, I do my artwork. That’s why I think I don’t have free time.
