We’re animal lovers here at Asiance, so when we see an Asian/Asian American person standing up for animal rights, we just have to announce it!

A new PETA Asia ad starring Chinese actor Gao Yuanyuan launched just as the annual slaughter of baby seals began this year on the ice floes of eastern Canada. During the annual slaughter, seal pups are shot or have their heads bashed in, and many are skinned alive. The European Union, Mexico, Russia and the US have banned seal products, and world leaders – including seal products, and world leaders – including Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Barack Obama – have spoken out against the massacre.

Gao Yuanyuan also poses for photography wearing a gown made of lettuce and cabbage leaves and a necklace made of red chili peppers during an event organized by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) Asia in Beijing June 8, 2011. According to the organizers, the aim of the event was to encourage people to quit meat and adopt a healthy and animal-friendly vegetarian diet. The words read, “A vegetarian diet starts from the heart”.
