The 2012 U.S. Olympic Team members Gabby Douglas of Virginia Beach, Va./Chow’s Gymnastics and Dance Institute, McKayla Maroney of Long Beach, Calif./All Olympia Gymnastics Center, Aly Raisman of Needham, Mass./Brestyan’s American Gymnastics, Kyla Ross of Aliso Viejo, Calif./Gym-Max Gymnastics, and Jordyn Wieber of DeWitt, Mich./Gedderts’ Twistars USA, grace the cover of the 2012 Olympic Games Preview issue of Sports Illustrated.
This is the first Sports Illustrated cover featuring the entire U.S. Olympic gymnastics team and the first for any U.S. gymnast since Kerri Strug made the Dec. 18, 1996, Year in Pictures issue. Since the Oct. 5, 1964 issue, which featured Marie Walther, U.S. gymnasts have graced the Sports Illustrated cover six times, including two with Mary Lou Retton in 1984.
The reigning world champions and heavy gold-medal favorites will begin Sunday’s team qualification on vault, their strongest event.
Kyla Ross is a mixture of Hawaiian, Filipina and Japanese descent, among a few other nationalities. We will be having a complete interview and internet chat with her when she returns with the Gold! One of her coaches (Asian woman in videos), Jenny Zhang (a former gymnast), is the personal coach for Kyla Ross and was selected as the assistant coach for the USA Women’s Gymnastics Team. Zhang will be on the competition floor during the qualification round and the team finals at the 2012 Olympic Games
