Olympian Rena Wang, of Arcadia, lost in her first and only singles badminton match during group play early last week.
Wang Xin, of China, defeated Wang in two games – 21-8, 21-6 – in less than 27 minutes.
Ranked 57th in the world, Wang, 21, is a UCLA biology student that formerly attended Arcadia High School. Wang Xin is one of the top two players in the world, only behind Wang Yihan, also of China.
Wang Xin and Rena Wang were the only two competitors in Group P of the badminton tournament, essentially making their game a elimination game despite the group play format.
Only 16 competitors continued on from group play into the knockout round.
China won Gold and Silver. India won Bronze.
