After five years as executive director of Asian American LEAD, Rosetta Lai has decided to step down Sept. 30 to pursue an independent consulting practice focusing on U.S.-China relations and has appointed Surjeet Ahluwalia, who currently serves as deputy executive director, to take the helm.

Over the last ten years, Ahluwalia has worked to build and strengthen several non-profit organizations. Before joining AALEAD in 2010, she was project manager for the Health Impact Fund, a proposal to increase innovation and access to life-saving medicines globally.

The Indian American served as start-up director of operations for Teach For India, based on the Teach For America model. She was also a project manager with AmericaSpeaks, where she managed several large initiatives to engage citizens more directly in governance, as well as with the District of Columbia’s Child and Family Services Agency.

Ahluwalia has a master’s degree in public policy from the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University and a bachelor’s degree in political science from the University of Rochester.
