A housewife in Mumbai has become the first woman to win the million dollar prize in India’s version of the popular game show ‘Who wants to be a Millionaire?’
It is only a game, but her win is seen as a victory for all women in India.
Ms. Sunmeet Kaur Sawhney, a 37-year-old housewife, became the first woman to win the popular game show ‘Kaun Banega Crorepati’, which is a spin-off from the UK version of ‘Who Wants to be a Millionaire?’.
Ms. Sunmeet, originally from Chandigarh, has never attended college.
She moved to Mumbai a few years ago with her husband and two daughters.
The family stays in a rented house and she gives tuition to earn extra income.
When asked what she would do with the money, Ms. Sunmeet said she will donate part of it for prayer rituals according to her Punjabi tradition, and then decide later what to do with the rest.
Her million dollar win has given her new found fame and fortune… but more than that, it has given women in India something to cheer about.
