“Different Points of Value”

In all my research for my monthly Shanghai burlesque show “Les Fleurs de Shanghai”, I naturally come across Anna May Wong all the time. For those who don’t know who she was, AMW was the first Chinese-American movie star who starred in over 18 films in her career including both silent and sound films. She starred opposite Marlene Dietrich in “Shanghai Express”, and I think she was the only truly visible Asian-American female figure in the American jazz age. Unfortunately her film roles were heavily criticized for depicting Chinese women as “dragon ladies” or as scheming, conniving seductresses.
