The Art of Japan: Kanazawa

Earlier this Spring, Kanazawa launched “The Art of Japan: Kanazawa” in NYC’s Japan Soceity that paid tribute to the artists, culture, and cuisine of Kanazawa, introducing attendees to the many things this magical city has to offer.

One highlight of the evening was an exhibition representing twenty Hokuriku-area artists. On display were works of lacquer, wood, ceramics, glass, silk, and metal, including traditional crafts and contemporary art.

Sake was served by Koume, a professional geisha in full regalia. She was escorted to the main event area on the arm of Taro Nakamura, CEO of Kanazawa’s Nakamura Brewery, an innovator in the field of organic sake brewing. They were followed by the premiere of Transcending Legends, a new collaborative work by butoh dancer Kiyomi Yamashita and experimental sound artist Norihito Minowa.

Throughout the evening, bamboo master Chifuyu Enomoto demonstrated his technique to interested observers, and in the process, produced several beautiful baskets. Meanwhile, original films depicting aspects of Kanazawa’s scenery, architecture, and culture played on a large screen, allowing viewers a glimpse of what makes the city so authentic and appealing.

The evening wrapped up after an inspiring speech by Japan Society’s Vice President and Gallery Director Joe Earle, followed by a drawing for Enomoto’s baskets, a bottle of Nakamura sake, and an original piece of jewelry by designer Evelyn Teploff-Mugii.

We look forward to seeing you soon in Kanazawa.
