Burlesque Anniversary!
Have you done your taxes yet? This is the first year I submitted mine WAY ahead in March! And I already got a sweet amount back which I am going to save 2/3 and use 1/3 to treat myself to another week off from my day job as a freelance Art Director in advertising to celebrate my burlesque anniversary!
This month marks the third year in burlesque for me, and I am very grateful for the opportunities that have come my way. People are always surprised to know that I’ve only been doing this for three years. They are surprised at how many successful shows I’ve produced and am producing and my growth as a performer. I explain my accelerated progress by saying that I have mastered the skill of “shut up, watch, and learn.” I paid attention. I watched. I learned. All these things I still do.
What started out as a hobby has now quickly rivaled my day job – the pie chart of my life is around 70% burlesque and 30% advertising day career. This week, for instance feels more like 100% burlesque. Besides having 2 days of no show every night of this week I gotta stick on false eyelashes and glittery my body.
Starting with Tuesday, 4/10 I have my “Drunken Dragon Nights” show at Macao Trading Company. This month’s open bar is sponsored by Bombay Sapphire and 9-11pm in the UPSTAIRS lounge. Unlike my usual show, I will be the only burlesque performer and I will be stripping to live music by Dandy Wellington and his band! They will be playing a really awesome set of funky, groovy soul music with a touch of vintage flair. As usual, event is free but RSVP is required via email to info@macaonyc.com
Wednesday, 4/11 is “Nuit Blanche” at Beaumarchais in the Meatpacking District. This week’s show theme is “1920s Prohibition”. When the economy is bad, bottoms are OFF and up!
Thursday, 4/12 is my usual night at Nurse Bettie followed by “Room69” on Friday, 4/13 at Hotel Chantelle. I am ending this week with a performance on Saturday, 4/14 at the 3rd Annual Rockabilly Rumble in Long Island! If you are into vintage cars, rockabilly music, pin ups, and all that, this is a really fun outdoor event!
By Sunday I will be totally looking forward to a ladies brunch with some of my favorite performer/friends!
