Tianlang Guan, the 14-year-old sensation from China, shot 69 Thursday and made the cut by one shot at the Zurich Classic in New Orleans, a couple of weeks after making the cut at the Masters in spite of a slow play penalty.
“I’m not too surprised. I think I did pretty good today,” the kid said when his round was over. And if he keeps playing like this, no one else is going to be surprised, either.
Guan, who opened with an even par 72 at TPC Louisiana Thursday, heads into the weekend tied for 57th. Among the big names who failed to make the cut were Keegan Bradley, K.J. Choi and the winner of this year’s Honda Classic, Michael Thompson.
But the teenager is unfazed by it all even though, while nine shots behind the leader, Lucas Glover, he has created the biggest buzz among the galleries this week.
Guan announced Thursday he plans to enter local qualifying for the U.S. Open in Dallas in two weeks but before that, he has other crawfish to fry this weekend.
“Making the cut is one of my goals,” he said. “I’m having fun these couple of days and I hope to play my best and go a little further into the weekend.”
