Must be nice!
The Yankees’ new Japanese pitching ace geared up for spring training by chartering a massive, luxury passenger plane to fly him to New York — along with his pet dog.
Masahiro Tanaka reportedly shelled out $195,000 for the one-way flight from Tokyo on a Boeing 787 Dreamliner, which seats more than 200 passengers.
But the airliner was empty except for Tanaka’s party of five, which included his wife and brown Toy Poodle, according to AFP, which cited Japanese news reports.
“It’s a (chartered) private jet. It’s not something the Yankees have prepared,” Tanaka told reporters at Japan’s Narita Airport on Sunday.
Tanaka, who recently signed a seven-year, $155 million contract with the Bronx Bombers, is set to introduce himself at a Yankee Stadium news conference on Tuesday.
He chartered the plane so he would arrive at spring training “in the best of form,” according to a Japanese baseball official who was with him for the flight.
Japan Airlines confirmed Tanaka flew on one of its 787s but wouldn’t comment further.
The 25-year-old went 24-0 with a 1.27 ERA in leading the Rakuten Golden Eagles to a title in Japan, inciting a major league bidding war that the Yankees won.
