Amy Everitt, State Director of NARAL Pro-Choice California, announced that PrivacyPAC, the organization’s political action committee, is proudly and enthusiastically endorsing candidate Kamala Harris for California Attorney General, an office that has significant influence over issues impacting the right to choose.

“There is no doubt that Harris has a deep commitment to choice. She has fought to protect a woman’s right to choose throughout her career,” said Everitt. She continued, “Perhaps more than any other state office, California’s next Attorney General will have a tremendous impact on a wide range of legislation affecting women’s health and reproductive choice. We are proud to endorse a candidate who shares our commitment to protecting every individual’s right to make personal and private health decisions.”

In this election cycle, PrivacyPAC examined Harris’ record, while her opponent refused to offer his views on choice. Harris has been endorsed by numerous pro-choice champions, including U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Senator Dianne Feinstein, Former San Francisco Mayor and Assembly Speaker Willie Brown, as well as numerous other pro-choice elected officials and non-profit organizations.

Despite numerous attempts to get the campaign to clarify his position, it is unclear where Harris’ opponent Steve Cooley stands on these issues. However, there is no doubt that Harris has a demonstrated commitment to reproductive rights, serving as the No on Prop 73 chair, and working with the campaigns against Props 85 and 4. She has been intimately and personally involved with NARAL Pro-Choice America and California, hosting the 10th Annual San Francisco Power of Choice Luncheon in 2005. Further, Harris personifies PrivacyPAC’s mission to endorse pro-choice, pro-equality and pro-privacy candidates, supporting marriage equality by pledging to join in the effort to repeal Prop 8 and supporting the repeal of the federal Defense of Marriage Act.

“Receiving NARAL’s endorsement is a huge honor that epitomizes the work that I have been doing to promote choice, education, privacy and women’s reproductive health,” said Kamala Harris. “I pledge to do everything in my power to work for, and maintain the freedom of Californians.”

Key to the issues of choice, privacy and equality under the Attorney General’s purview will be the implementation of new regulations surrounding federal health-care reform, as well as the continued fights against the deceptive commercial practices of crisis pregnancy centers and anti-choice ballot initiatives.

NARAL Pro-Choice California’s PrivacyPAC is a political action committee that supports pro-choice candidates running for statewide office through financial, organizational, and volunteer resources.
