Marisa Sung’s Rules of Etiquette For The Modern World Number 18

Thou shalt not act as my “representative” or “interpreter” without my permission.

Just because I was born half deaf does not mean that I am slow, retarded or incapable of representing myself. I do not need a pushy and obnoxious, know-it-all “friend” to go around telling people (esp. attractive men) behind my back that I am deaf. They get all confused and start trying to speak to me as if I am seriously retarded. Either that or they suddenly avoid the situation, or try communicating with little to zero knowledge of sign language where they actually appear retarded! Read a book or two like “Seeing Voices” and “The Mind’s Eye” to try to open your mind and educate yourself on how to assimilate with the deaf and/or hard of hearing, the blind, etc. It’s called being “cultured” and becoming “a decent human being.”
