Lucy Liu snags lead role in ‘Snakehead’
Lucy Liu will play a Chinese mother who starts off looking for her daughter in New York but soon gets sidetracked into working for a human trafficking outfit in “Snakehead.”
And the “Elementary,” “Charlie’s Angels” and “Kill Bill” co-star will be able to drawn on her own cultural background for the “Snakehead” portrayal of family values and underworld ambition.
“I was drawn to this story and character not only because it ties into my history as a Chinese American but also as a New Yorker,” she told Deadline.
“After reading Evan’s script, the hidden world of human smuggling was exposed to be right here in everyone’s backyard and the reality is at the same time fascinating and grotesque.”
The film’s writer and director tells a similar story.
“Being a 6th generation Chinese-American, I’ve always been curious about my past and how my ancestors emigrated to the United States,” said Evan Jackson Leong, whose background is in documentary-making, including basketball profile “Linsanity,” but who has also worked with “The Fast and the Furious” regular helmer Justin Lin.
“New York, and more specifically its Chinatown, is a fascinating backdrop, that is full of hope, yet fraught with danger.”
Shooting is scheduled to start in spring of 2015.

snakehead is a predatory fish native to southern and eastern Asia that is now found in several American states. The fish was likely introduced to the United States by people who bought live snakehead from fish markets or pet shops and later released them into lakes, rivers or ponds.
The northern snakehead is a voracious predator that lives in lakes, ponds, rivers and streams in water temperatures ranging from 0° to 30°C. It has been reported to travel on land for short distances by wiggling its body forward. A lung-like organ enables it to absorb oxygen by gulping air at the surface,
allowing it to thrive in water that is low in oxygen and to survive out of water in moist conditions for up to four days.
The snakehead has been dubbed a “frankenfish” because of its reptile-like behaviour, aggressive eating habits and mouthful of long, sharp teeth.
