Washington, DC – Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard (HI) will receive the Major George A. Smith HOOAH Award at the 2013 National Conference on Citizenship on Sept. 19. The HOOAH Award recognizes a veteran who defines citizenship through service to our country, both in uniform and beyond. Congresswoman Gabbard’s service in the National Guard, voluntary deployment to Iraq, and experience as a state legislator, city councilwoman, and congresswoman all contributed to her receiving this award. Congresswoman Gabbard is also the first female and Asian American to receive the award.

In 2012, the National Conference on Citizenship also awarded Secretary Norman Mineta, a prominent Asian American, with the prestigious Franklin Award. This Award is given to outstanding individuals in federal service who are working to strengthen citizenship in America.
