Eugene, who is half Japanese, will be fun to watch in Rio 2016!
Over the course of 10 days at meets in Singapore, Tokyo and Beijing, Godsoe won eight out of nine men’s backstroke races.
Eugene swept the 50-, 100- and 200-meter backstroke in Singapore and Beijing, and he won the 50 and 100 in Japan. First-place finishes at World Cup meets are worth $1,500 in prize money per race.
Godsoe, an assistant coach at his college alma mater Stanford, won the 50 backstroke in 23.07 seconds Thursday at the 6,000-seat National Aquatics Centre in Beijing. The time is the second-fastest in the world this year and matched Godsoe’s own season best set in Japan a few days earlier.
