Thousands Gather for Hmong New Year Celebration

Thousands of people are gathering at the Patriot Center in Rothschild this weekend, to celebrate the Hmong New Year.

People come from all over the state to enjoy Hmong culture during this two day event.

It’s the 16th year of celebration in the Wausau area, and more than four thousand people attend over the two day period.

“It is a celebration kind of like a melding of the convergence of Thanksgiving and to be also the idea of a war victory day,” says Xiong C. Lor, chairperson of the Hmong New Year celebration.

The event includes many different hmong cultural performances, like vocal competitions, dances, and musical performances.

Students from UWSP’s Hmong and Southeast Asian American Club put on a fashion show this morning, and our very own Sunrise 7 anchor Bao Vang was one of the MC’s of the event.
