ImaginAsian Pictures Hosted Opening for The Motel
NEW YORK, June 30, 2006 ‘‚¬” ImaginAsian Pictures recently hosted the Opening Night Reception for The Motel, Michael Kang’s critically acclaimed debut feature film, which premiered at the Film Forum in New York City on June 28.
The reception was held at Do Hwa, and was attended by director Michael Kang, and cast members Jeffery Chyau, Sung Kang, Samantha Futerman, and Jade Wu. Other guests included Miguel Arteta (director, The Good Girl), Wayne Wang (director, The Joy Luck Club), Ron Yuan (CSI), Miss Info (Hot 97 DJ), and MTV’s Suchin Pak.
Co-released by Palm Pictures and ImaginAsian Pictures, The Motel tells a beautiful coming-of-age tale of 13-year-old Ernest (Jeffrey Chyau), a second-generation Chinese American, who dreams of becoming a writer, but who spends most of his time helping his mother run a sleazy rent-by-the-hour motel. His life is brightened by a friendship with Christine (Samantha Futerman, who played the luminous young lead in Memoirs of a Geisha), a teenager who works at her family’s Chinese restaurant. Things change with the arrival of a charismatic stranger (Sung Kang, from The Fast and the Furious 3: Tokyo Drift and Better Luck Tomorrow). The San Francisco Chronicle called the film ‘‚¬Å“a momentous achievement. Heartfelt (and) hilarious.’‚¬
