The Dept. of Education has allocated $1.2 million to the Queens College’s Asian/American Center. (New York Daily News) The money will go towards a community-oriented curriculum in Asian American Pacific Islander Communities studies, beginning this Spring with a course in Asian American History.
The Center will also use the grant to hire visiting faculty in Asian American studies, sponsor national conferences, and give students travel stipends. Local community organizations will also receive funds if they work with Queens College to develop programs for mentoring student interns, said Center Director Madhulika Khandelwal.
Of the 19,500 students who are currently enrolled at Queens College, over 25 percent are first- or second-generation Asian-American, says Khandelwal. About 21 percent of Queens’ 2.3 million residents are Asian-American. (NYC.gov).
Even universities are going Asian!
