Hideki Matsui, whose seven-year run with the Yankees crested with a World Series Most Valuable Player award last month, agreed to a one-year contract with the Angels on Monday. If he passes his physical to complete the deal, Matsui should be in New York to receive his ring with his former teammates.
Matsui decided to take the Angels’ offer rather than see if the Yankees would bring him back.
Matsui commanded a traveling party of Japanese reporters that was usually bigger than the group of traveling New York writers. The Yankees strengthened their global brand by Matsui’s presence, opening the season in Tokyo in 2004
A report on ESPN.com said Matsui would earn $6.5 million from the Angels.
