Case of the Ex

“He’s been seeing the both of us and it’s not right~
playing with our hearts. Just thought that you should know.”

When I opened the text message from the unknown number, my heart sank to the floor. I didn’t have to guess who it was. I had a flash back of last summer when I caught my ex-boyfriend cheating. Like him, I wasn’t going to let Tyghe off the hook so easily and neither was she. The way I look it at, the bitch was going down.

2 hours earlier…

I met up with Tyghe for lunch at the Seaport earlier that day. I took the day off for a little pampering; a gift he gave me for my birthday. It was the perfect afternoon to unwind before the weekend. During lunch I sensed that he wasn’t in a good mood.

“How’s work going?” I asked in between bites.

“Could be better,” he responded. He wasn’t very hungry. He barely touched his food.

“Are you okay? You seem irritated.”

“Nothing I want to talk about right now.”

It was from Florida. “He’s been seeing the both of us and it’s not right ~ playing with our hearts. Just thought that you should know.”

I let it go. I figured if it were something important he would have shared it with me. He was probably just having a bad day work. After lunch I headed over to Union Square to indulge at the spa. While I was waiting my phone started to buzz in my bag. It was a text message. I thought it was Tyghe telling me to enjoy the gift he gave me. Sometimes he would send a random text message during the day letting me know that he missed me or that he couldn’t wait to see me later. He was sweet like that. I looked at the message and it wasn’t from him. I didn’t recognize the number. It certainly wasn’t from New York. It was from Florida.

“He’s been seeing the both of us and it’s not right~
playing with our hearts. Just thought that you should know.”

The color immediately drained from my face. My eyes started to well up with tears and my skin was beginning to burn. My hands balled up into a fist. The message was from Danielle, his ex. Was this true? Was this really happening? Could he be seeing his ex-girlfriend behind my back? All I thought was how could I fall for this yet again. It would explain the weird things I found at his apartment- written notes to him hidden in between the pages of his note pad, that pink camisole, black spandex dance shorts, and left over toiletries, such as tampons. Then again she could very well be lying. I’ve heard scandalous stories about her and how she drove away Tyghe’s last girlfriend just like this. I was her next victim. I wouldn’t put it pass her to pull a stunt like this. Regardless of who was telling the truth, I wanted to hear it from the horse’s mouth. Literally. So I called back the number. It might not have been the best move to make but I was desperate for answers. I was hoping she would pick up so we could speak woman to woman. But as I suspected, it went to voicemail. Coward.

The bitch had some nerve contacting me the way she did. And on my day off! I know it may sound catty, but how would you like it if your boyfriend’s ex-girlfriend texted you saying that he was still seeing her behind your back? Probably not too good. My main concern was how she got a hold of my number. The only way she could have gotten it is if she retrieved it from Tyghe’s phone, which means he must’ve seen her recently.

Most importantly I wanted an explanation from Tyghe. I started punching in his work number on my cell phone. No answer. I tried calling him several more times and it went straight to voicemail. That’s it. I was convinced. He knew the game was up and that I found out. I had a million story lines playing in my head about how they planned for it to all go down. It was all carefully thought out. After Danielle texted me she would call Tyghe to tell him that the package was delivered. “Hurry! Abort mission before Elysia realizes our master plan. Go! Go! Go!” Danielle would say. He would avoid my phone calls so he wouldn’t have to explain himself about the harsh way he had cut me loose. Then they would run off together on their private jet, laughing at my misfortune while toasting with a glass of champagne to their successful operation. Bastards.

According to Tyghe, he was in his room the entire time trying to go to bed while this was all going down in the living room.

That was just one scenario I had in mind. You never know. It could happen. I snapped out of my bizarre daydream when my phone went off. It was Tyghe. My heart was pounding. I was scared to find out what he had to say. I finally picked up my phone.

“Sorry. I was in a meeting and I couldn’t call you right away. What’s up?” he said casually. He was in a meeting, a likely story.

“Who’s number is (845)-555-1654?” I asked without greeting him a hello. I wanted answers.

“That sounds like Danielle’s number. Why?”

“Because she texted me!” I read him the text word for word. “Are you cheating on me? Have you been seeing her behind my back this entire time?” I was ranting off and I couldn’t stop. “Just tell me the truth for my own peace of mind. I just want to know. Have you? Have you?!”

“She was over my house last night,” was all he could say. “I didn’t want to tell you until later tonight so we could discuss it in a more private manner.”

“WHAT?!” I yelped. People started to stare. “I knew it! I knew it!”

I was duped. My body went numb and I was finished. Tyghe explained that Danielle came over last night because she wanted to see him before she left for Florida. He didn’t want to see her but she drove over from her apartment anyway. Danielle finally arrived at Tyghe’s apartment and waited hours since he apparently wouldn’t open the door for her. Later that night his roommate came home and accidently let Danielle inside. It turned out to be a huge mistake. After her tears and lies of trying to convince Tyghe’s roommate that he really did want to see her, Danielle was eventually kicked out. According to Tyghe, he was in his room the entire time trying to go to bed while this was all going down in the living room. He said he never spoke to her while she was over. And that was his story.

That was the deal breaker for me and I didn’t want to hear anything else he had to say. So I hung up the phone with him. I couldn’t believe that was the load of bullshit he was going to feed me. After my appointment, which did nothing for me, I went back to my apartment. Tyghe was waiting for me on my stoop. He apologized for not telling me sooner. We talked and sorted things out. Who was I going to believe- some ex who’s still in love with my boyfriend or my boyfriend who actually loves me? I believed him. Needless to say, we made up.
