Michelle Kwan is adding commencement speaker and honorary doctor to her impressive resume.
The nine-time U.S. champion and winner of two Olympic medals will be given an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree by Southern Vermont College on May 8, when she addresses the graduating class.
Kwan is attending graduate school for international affairs at Tufts University and has served as a diplomatic envoy for the U.S. government.
“Education has and always will be a very important part of my life,”
the five-time world champion said.
“I look forward to speaking to the graduating class, sharing some of my life experiences with them and congratulating them for their own academic accomplishments and success.”
The 29-year-old Kwan won an American record 43 figure skating titles, plus silver at the 1998 Olympics and bronze in 2002. Her competitive career ended at the 2006 Olympics when she withdrew because of injury and eventually needed hip surgery.
In 2006, the State Department appointed her to a position in which she travels the world to talk with youngsters about leadership and social and educational issues.
