Akon To Team Up With AR Rahman

According to several reports, Senegalese singer Akon will be working with Slumdog Millionaire composer and fellow musician A.R. Rahman on an upcoming album entitled Freedom is Beautiful.

News of the collaboration comes shortly after Rahman won an Academy Award for both Best Original Music Score and Best Original Song at the 2009 Oscars for his work on the Slumdog Millionaire score.

The album is said to be a mixture of Hip Hop and bhangra, a form of music from the Punjab region of India.

Since the release of his single “Mr. Lonely” Akon has gradually risen to fame in India.

Freedom Is Beautiful will also feature appearances by artists such as Colby O’Donis and friend of Akon, Kardinal Offishall.

"AR Rahman is Akon’s friend. And the two wanted to do some work together,” Kardinal Offishall explained to India’s Daily News & Analysis. “I was introduced to him during the shoot for Akon’s video. Everyone knows Rahman. I have heard his music."

Recently, Rahman appeared briefly in the music video for Akon’s “Beautiful”, a song from his album entitled Freedom. The video for “Beautiful” premiered last month on Yahoo! Music.

Released in 2008, Freedom is Akon’s third studio album. Freedom went on to sell a little over 100,000 copies in its first week and reached the number seven spot on the Billboard 200 chart.

There is still no word yet on when Akon and Rahman will begin working on Freedom Is Beautiful.
