Which industries are Best for Asian-American Women?
Latinas and Black and Asian women continue to find themselves hitting the glass ceiling more often than white women. Among women in management nationally, white women still dominate the top-level positions, accounting for 28.7 percent of all senior managers, compared with 3.2 percent for Blacks, 2 percent for Latinas and 1.5 percent for Asians, reports the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission.
"In our culture, it’s not acceptable to challenge authority. I had to force myself to be a visible leader," Ling Wu says. "I had to be very assertive, very clear, and that doesn’t come very easily."
But despite the poor representation of Latinas and Black and Asian women in management, some industries and companies–and the most progressive organizations, the DiversityInc Top 50–are gaining market share by recruiting and developing this underutilized talent. Among the DiversityInc Top 50, 31 percent of women in management who received promotions in 2007 were Latina, Black or Asian. Nationally, 15 percent of women in senior management, CEOs and direct reports, were Latina, Black or Asian.
