We Art Taiwan
It was standing room only in Taipei Economic and Cultural Center (TECO) in midtown Manhattan as the crowd cheered for 23 talented musicians, from Manhattan, Queens, Brooklyn and Hoboken.
The unique musical event was hosted by We Art Taiwan, a non-profit focusing on creating opportunities for emerging artists and musicians.
With a talented ensemble of chamber musicians led by Andy Lin (viola), the sounds of Taiwanese folk tunes were artfully woven with influences of modern jazz and American pop into a rich and refreshing musical tapestry.
Although the Disney animated classic Mulan brought the story to the mainstream, what really happened was presented in the second set, from songs by award winner music composer Owen Wang’s The Real legend of Mulan. Translated by Natti Vogel, the songs’ sophisticated humor and stylized presentation kept the audience alternately swaying and laughing to the end.
For the final performance of the night, Macy Chen, the sensational Jazz vocalist, and her drummer Jun Saito, brought down the house! Macy debuted six songs from her soon to be released CD. The crowd was moved from the start with her mesmerizing and emotional vocal style. Harlem Fantasia, Macy’s last song, culminated with the entire audience rising to it’s collective feet, calling for, and receiving, a heartfelt encore from the talented jazz artist.
"This was fantastic, I loved the show and I cannot wait for Macy’s next performance!" were sentiments echoed by many audience members as they exited the TECO.
