Lucullen’s fashion designer Joyce Huang

Designer Joyce Huang has created pieces for Lucullen that are designed to elegantly take women through the demands of their workday and into their plans for the evening afterwards. This time, her creations exhibit influences from the Mod and Rocker styles of ‘60s British youth culture, updated and made accessible to professional women of any age.

“Fashion should be fun,” says Huang. “It should be fun to wear, fun to buy, fun to look at. So much of what was the 1960s, especially the music, had a joy, and a lightness, and a fun attitude to it. But there was just enough of a bite to it all to make it a little bit dangerous. This was the inspiration for this new collection.”

The playful, yet edgy, attitude Lucullen introduces in its Fall 2010 collection is seen in the cut, color combinations, and bold fabrics used for the pieces. The use of sequins and the detailing of several pieces give them a true ’60s rock star look. At the same time, Lucullen’s signature of luxuriously sensual fashion for women is seen throughout the collection. Versatility has been a hallmark of this unique, high-end fashion brand since its inception, resulting in its wide appeal to women of many lifestyles.

Huang, Lucullen’s founder and head designer, has successfully created various collections around the world, in cities such as Taipei, Shanghai, Toronto, and New York, for over a decade. She possesses the elegant talent to weave the passion and confidence of a true woman into the fabrics of her creations. Many have found her line “Soft but sculptured, creating an essence of professional appeal. Her style is tender and demure, but bold – desiring attention. It is delicate and discreet while fearless and assertive.”

These traits of Huang’s line echo from city to city.

Embodying a sense of strong global awareness and social responsibility, Lucullen has been actively involved in charitable activities, including its recent sponsorship of a benefit to raise funds for typhoon relief in Taiwan, organized by AsianinNY.com, and its sponsorship of the “Sing for China” benefit to raise AIDS awareness. Both events took place in New York City.

ASIANCE: Tell us a little bit about your background.

Joyce: My background is Canadian- Taiwaness. My parents are immigrants from Taiwan and moved to Canada in 1992. I have degrees from:

-Sheridan College Oakville, Ontario
Dipoloma, Fashion Technique and Design

-Shin-Chen College, Taipei, Taiwan in 1990.

-F.I.T. New York NY , Certificate in Fashion Development and Marketing in 1992.

-Promostyle, Paris, France in fashion training workshop in 1992

ASIANCE: What made you become a fashion designer?

Joyce: My mother and grandmother. They both know how to sew. They both make a living in couture design for particular clients.

My mother had a successful career in her couture design. I always embraced the sewing machine and full, beautiful fabrics and Italian Vogue, video fashion shows from Milan, Paris and New York and French fashion magazines. I always have new and fashionable clothes to wear. I go fabric shopping with my mom and ask her to make clothes for me. I did not know I would choose to be a fashion designer or it would become my future career at that time, until I was working part-time for a designer once I graduate from Parson School in New York, as a sales assistant. I found my passion for fashion. I guess it’s the genes from my mother. She has been my best supporter and mentor. I don’t remember my first fashion show, but I do remember my mother took me to a major fashion show by ” Pierre Cardin” from Paris to see their runway presentation.

ASIANCE: What inspires you?

Joyce: Beauty, beautiful things, black and white movies, people on the streets.

ASIANCE: What would you be doing if you weren’t designing?

Joyce: I never, never thought about it. I guess I am very determined. Oh, I got one, a buyer? I love to buy, never enough! Ha…

ASIANCE: What other designers inspire you?

Joyce: I am very versatile. I like edgy and avant-garde design like the late Alexander McQueen,Viktor and Rolf. Timeless classic design, like Valentino and Chanel. All the designers!
