Genki Spark opens the Boston Asian Am Film Fest tonight!

Launched the summer of 2010 with a workshop hosted by the Asian American women’s organization, ASPIRE, The Genki Spark aims to share the art of Japanese Taiko Drumming and to promote and support the voice and visibility of Asian Americans.

Working with families, schools, activist organizations, social and nonprofit groups, The Genki Spark appeals to a broad audience. Through taiko demonstrations, presentations on Asian American culture, and recreational taiko workshops, The Genki Spark strives to build community, foster self confidence, and promote a world where every culture is respected.

Taiko drumming is an art form that has a long, rich history in Japan. In modern times it has been used to forward social movements in both Japan and North America. Young Japanese Americans of the ’70s, having witnessed the effects of the internment camps on their families, used taiko drumming to build community, organize, and take pride in their heritage and culture.

The Genki Spark presents “Genki Unleashed”, a special one-time taiko demonstration by Asian women to celebrate the opening of the Festival!
