Review Round-Up: ’7 Khoon Maaf’

“7 Khoon Maaf” (Seven Sins Forgiven), based on Ruskin Bond’s story “Susanna’s Seven Husbands,” is Vishal Bhardwaj’s latest work. The director, known for the unconventional and often daring plots of his movies, this time brings on the screen the tale of a woman’s quest for love. But it’s no ordinary pursuit of romance: every time Susanna’s men fail her, she kills them.

Priyanka Chopra interprets the fiery Susanna, whose marriages go wrong (and then turn sinister). Her husbands are played by some of Bollywood’s big names including Annu Kapoor, Neil Nitin Mukesh, Naseeruddin Shah and John Abraham.

Critics warn Bollywood fans that because of its dark subject matter, the film may not appeal to everyone. And although the movie seems to have it all – love, murder and the stunning Ms. Chopra– many found the plot tiresome. Part of the problem, critics said, is that everyone knows where the film is going from its outset. But not all agreed, and many found the film’s narrative style engaging.

Don’t get any ideas now!
