We are delighted to help spread the word about a very important event presented by our friends and colleagues at Glucksman Ireland House, Glucksman Ireland House University Day, on Saturday, April 16.The theme of this year’s day-long event is “Who Do We Think We Are? The Irish Family”, featuring readings and discussions with authors Colm Tóibín, Pete Hamill and Peter Quinn, actress Fionnula Flanagan, and more.
Also, midway through our Spring 2011 season, we would like to take a moment to thank you for joining us for the diverse range of programs and events we have presented at IAC and around the city over the past several months, including Mimic in the Donaghy Theatre, A Tribute to the Famous McNultys at Symphony Space and our inaugural Irish Arts Center Book Day in all five boroughs. And we are just getting started!

The theme of this year’s Glucksman Ireland House University Day is “Who Do We Think We Are? The Irish Family.”
Writer Colm Tóibín opens the program with a reading from his recent collection of short stories, The Empty Family, and discussion of the dynamics of the Irish family in modern literature. President of the Betty Ford Institute Dr. Garrett O’Connor, delivers the keynote lecture “Resilience, Shame, Alcohol and Survival: The Tragic and Triumphant Alchemy of Irish Cultural History” exploring the complex elements of the Irish historical experience and how that experience illuminates the Irish relationship to alcohol.
Glucksman Ireland House faculty members Professor Linda Dowling Almeida, Professor Marion Casey and Professor Miriam Nyhan speak on the Oral History of Irish America project and what is revealed about the family.
Writers Pete Hamill and Peter Quinn discuss immigrant parents and their American children, and Patricia Harty, editor of Irish America Magazine, talks to actress Fionnula Flanagan (The Others, The Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood, Some Mother’s Son) about Ireland and Irish America.
