More than 100,000 North Koreans rallied in support of new leader Kim

More than 100,000 North Koreans rallied in support of new leader Kim Jong-Un, state media reported, days after he was proclaimed the “great successor” to his father.

The mass rally at Kim Il-Sung Square in the capital Pyongyang was attended by citizens and a number of senior officials, the state KCNA news agency said, in another sign the North is closing ranks behind its new leader.

South Korea’s news agency Yonhap said the North’s state television had released footage today, of a visit at the weekend by the young leader to a tank division.

The visit, during which Jong-Un spoke with military officers, was his first solo inspection of the unit since the death of his father and long-time leader Kim Jong-Il, according to the footage, Yonhap said.

On Saturday the North announced that Jong-Un, aged in his late 20s, had formally been appointed supreme commander of the 1.2-million-strong military, the world’s fourth-largest.
