MTV reality hit ‘Jersey Shore’ doesn’t hurt New Jersey’s reputation, says new poll

It turns out Snooki & Co. aren’t ruining New Jersey’s rep.

A healthy percentage of people who watch “Jersey Shore” say they have a positive opinion of the state, even though it’s portrayed as a haven of unnaturally tan hard partiers.

About 43% of those who have seen the MTV reality hit say they have a favorable view, compared to 41% of those who haven’t seen the show, according to new Fairleigh Dickinson University PublicMind poll released Monday.

Only 18% of viewers and non-viewers alike had a negative opinion of Jersey.

“The show isn’t hurting the nation’s view of the state,” said Peter Woolley, director of the poll.

“In fact, it may be promoting one of the state’s best features – not Snooki, but the shore itself. It seems to me viewers are looking past The Situation to the shore scene itself.”

Last year, New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie blasted the series for tarnishing the state’s image.

He said the show “takes a bunch of New Yorkers, drops them at the Jersey Shore and tries to make America feel like this is New Jersey.”

The recent poll doesn’t change how the governor feels, according to Christie’s press secretary.

“Honestly, I don’t think the poll refutes the point that Snooki and company do not represent real New Jerseyans, the Jersey Shore or New Jersey in any way,” Michael Drewniak said. “Or that they are an embarrassment.”

“Jersey Shore” is filming its fourth season, which is set to premiere Aug. 4, in Seaside Heights.
