The youth wing of Malaysia’s opposition Islamic party has blamed the celebration

The youth wing of Malaysia’s opposition Islamic party has blamed the celebration of Valentine’s Day for rising social ills in the country.

It said Muslims should steer clear of any Valentine’s-related celebrations, as they contravene Islamic teachings.

A group led by the opposition Islamic party PAS has taken the media to task for promoting Valentine’s Day.

The members submitted a protest memorandum to the Ministry of Information, Communications and Culture, demanding the local media stop all Valentine’s Day promotional campaigns on TV, radio and the newspapers.

They also want the authorities to take action against hotels and restaurants that sell intimate Valentine’s Day packages to Muslims as this may lead to unlawful sex and babies born out of wedlock.

While opinions are mixed on whether Valentine’s Day ought to be celebrated by Muslims in Malaysia, the fact remains that February 14 — or lovers’ day — is very much in the diaries of many Malaysians and celebrated each year by hundreds and thousands of couples regardless of race and religion.

Well Happy Valentine’s Day to you!
