{"id":10096,"date":"2011-08-25T04:08:45","date_gmt":"2011-08-25T04:08:45","guid":{"rendered":""},"modified":"2011-08-25T04:08:45","modified_gmt":"2011-08-25T04:08:45","slug":"Can-China-Win-Miss-Universe-","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/asiancemagazine.com\/?p=10096","title":{"rendered":"Can China Win Miss Universe?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Lou Zilin, Miss China, is poised to become the China\u2019s first ever Miss Universe at the contest is Brazil next month.<\/strong> To up her chances, she is currently in New York, undergoing extensive training on how to become \u201cless Chinese,\u201d <strong>under the category_idance of TV personality Yue-Sai Kan, national director of Miss Universe China. From the Australian:<br \/>\n<\/strong><br \/>\n    <em>She took her young charge to her Upper West Side apartment four weeks ago and has since put her through lessons in English conversation, French table manners, samba, jazz and tap dancing as well as high-level socialising. \u201cShe has met Paul McCartney, Russell Simmons [the hip-hop artist],\u201d she told The Times yesterday. \u201cWe were with Claire Danes for a screening of Homeland.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>    <em>No Miss China has won Miss Universe for a decade, but as Ms Kan prepares her charge for next month\u2019s contest in Sao Paulo, Brazil, she has sought to work a transformation akin to that attempted by Henry Higgins on the young Eliza Doolittle in George Bernard Shaw\u2019s Pygmalion.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>    <em>\u201cWhen I say she\u2019s too Chinese, I don\u2019t mean to be negative. Too Chinese means they are very reserved,\u201d she said. \u201cWhen you compliment them, they put their hands over their mouth. They are not used to being assertive. Also, we have absolutely no culture of beauty pageants.\u201d Ms Lou was already a successful model.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>    <em>\u201cBut they are just walking hangers,\u201d said Ms Kan, who appears to have been extremely successful in overcoming any shyness she might have suffered. \u201cThey don\u2019t have to say anything. They don\u2019t have to express any emotions whatsoever.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>or Forbes, Ray Kwong interviews Lou:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>    <em>The odds-on favorite to win Miss Universe, the planet\u2019s top international beauty contest, Luo isn\u2019t caught up with all the glitz, glamour and pageantry. Nor are there any signs of shallowness some might expect.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>    <em>\u201cI\u2019m excited and love what I\u2019m doing,\u201d Luo told me, \u201cbut it\u2019s important to keep things in perspective. I understand that I am in a position to make a real impact on any number of important humanitarian causes, not only as a role model, but as a doer. And that responsibility stays with me whether I win or lose.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>    <strong>Miss China \u201cdoes not want to disappoint.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>    <strong>The weight of China and its 1.3 billion populace<\/strong>, however, has got to be a compelling factor to win. \u201cI don\u2019t want to disappoint,\u201d said Luo.<\/p>\n<p><strong>It&#8217;s definitely the
