Have you ever had sex with Rick Perry?<\/strong><\/p>\n

What else is new (yawn)? The man is undoubtedly smoking hot and I wouldn’t ever kick him out of bed but really, are we okay with this? An actual newspaper (the Austin Chronicle) is running this full-page ad next week? <\/p>\n

This seems like an awful lot of money to spend on an ad likely to result in a large number of people saying, \u201cNo!\u201d emphatically and continuing with their days, but then again, perhaps this lack of acumen is why I am not the president of CASH. And I\u2019m not sure why he chose the \u201cStar Wars\u201d font. Nothing says effective ad-making like \u201can ad (hominem) hoping to find someone who has had sex with Rick Perry, written in a \u201cStar Wars\u201d font, that implies offensive things about Hillary Clinton\u2019s footwear.\u201d <\/p>\n

It\u2019s not even a personal attack. It\u2019s an ad hoping it can make a personal attack later. Is this really where we are?<\/p>\n

\u201cGee,\u201d this ad says. \u201cWouldn\u2019t it be great if there were a scandal in Rick Perry\u2019s personal life? Get on that, facts.\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cRick Perry Is A Family Values Hypocrite*\u201d the ad says. *We still have no facts to support this claim. <\/p>\n

Are we okay with this? We shouldn\u2019t be. <\/p>\n

\u201cThere is nothing worse than someone who believes something fervently for no reason and then sits there waiting for the facts to catch up!\u201d people say, shaking their fist at Rick Perry\u2019s attitudes about the Fed and the climate.<\/p>\n

Well, this is exactly the same thing. <\/p>\n

\u201cI dislike Rick Perry, so he must be a hypocrite!\u201d No. If people with whom we disagreed were always hypocrites, the world would be a simpler and far more terrifying place. <\/p>\n

What bothers me most about this wishful ad hominem ad is that it opens the floodgates to new ads. <\/p>\n

Look, it\u2019s one thing to make ad hominem attacks. And slander exists \u2014 just think of all those robocalls. But it\u2019s only common courtesy to wait for the facts to catch up with you, especially in print. <\/p>\n

At least it used to be. <\/p>\n
