On August 18, Newt and I traveled to Los Angeles, California for a series of roundtable meetings with community, business, and political leaders in the local Asian American community.<\/p>\n
We met with Thai-American, Korean-American and Chinese-American leaders to listen to their concerns about local, state and federal government.<\/p>\n
In Thai Town, community leaders emphasized the need to spur job creation in their community by reforming local, state, and federal regulations that are currently preventing hiring in their community — largely dominated by the restaurant and tourism industries. Visa reform was also a major concern.<\/p>\n
Next, we met with leaders of the Korean-American community in Korea Town. The discussion echoed concerns similar to the Thai-American community: creating jobs, growing the American economy, and visa reform. Korean-American leaders also voiced their support for the United States-Korea Free Trade Agreement.<\/p>\n

Our visit ended with a roundtable discussion with Chinese-American leaders from southern California.<\/p>\n
Many Chinese immigrants and first-generation Chinese Americans are returning to China due to the lack of job opportunities in the United States. Local and state regulations, bureaucracy and red tape were also a major concern among those struggling to create jobs.<\/p>\n
Our discussions with Thai-Americans, Korean-Americans, and Chinese-Americans were a great opportunity to listen and learn from local community leaders. We look forward to continuing our conversation with the Asian American community.
