At least 16 people have been killed and dozens injured in Nepal and northern India after a 6.8-magnitude earthquake struck the region.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Five people died in Nepal, including three crushed when a wall of the British embassy compound collapsed in the capital, Kathmandu.<\/p>\n

At least five people died in Sikkim and six elsewhere in India.<\/p>\n

Several earthquakes have hit the region this year, but none has caused major damage.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Five people were killed in Sikkim and more than 50 reported injured, according to the state’s top official, Chief Secretary Karma Gyatso.<\/p>\n

Rescuers were searching for those who may be trapped under fallen buildings in the city, state police chief Jasbir Singh said.<\/p>\n

“We have sounded a high alert. Police are on the streets in Gangtok and other major towns,” he told the Associated Press news agency.<\/p>\n

One person was killed during a stampede as people panicked in a town in the eastern state of Bihar, and other deaths were reported near Darjeeling, in West Bengal.<\/p>\n
